UAE is model of political stability: think-tank

The UAE has become a model of political stability at a time when some nations in the region are witnessing unrest despite the presence of a large foreign community in the country, a prominent think-tank said on Wednesday.

Recent reports by international institutions have served to give credence to this status, which is bolstered by the strong cohesion between the country’s leadership and its openness, tolerance and acceptance of others, the Abu Dhabi-based Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies (ECSSR) said in an article.

“The UAE has become a model of political stability at the regional and global levels,” said ECSSR, headed by General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

“Benchmarks and indices issued by international institutions have repeatedly confirmed this. Bank of America Merrill Lynch, for instance, recently released a 25-point index of politically stable countries in Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa where point one referred to the least resilient country against political risks while point 25 indicated the most immune. The UAE ranked three, securing 23 points, among 80 countries included in the study.”

The centre said political stability in the UAE, the second largest Arab economy, is due to what it described as an effective development policy adopted by the country’s leadership, which gives the citizen its “utmost attention.”

“The UAE leadership is keen to deliver the benefits of its development efforts to all emirates of the federation without exception. It is also keen to make this a comprehensive development that includes economic, social, cultural, environmental and political aspects,” it said.

“Hence the high ranking that the UAE has secured goes hand in hand with the top ranking it has got in the fields of economic advancement and educational, construction and health development….this is in addition to other indices of human development in which the UAE has secured top rankings,” it added, referring to the recent UN report on development, which ranked the UAE on top of other Arab nations and 32nd internationally.

ECSSR said the level of interaction between the leadership and people of the UAE represents one of the major facets of political stability in the country.

“The leadership gives utmost attention to its citizens who, in turn, experience this in their daily lives….this deepens their loyalty for the leadership and creates a sense of belonging to the homeland, which provides them with welfare and a decent standard of living,” the centre said.

“The policy of openness and tolerance adopted by the UAE’s leadership is also considered one of the major elements of political stability and social harmony in the country.  This is because such a policy bolsters the values of moderation, acceptance of others and complete rejects extremism and violence.”
