Arab man assaults visiting lady

An Egyptian man allegedly raped a visiting Brazilian plastic surgeon who was also his family friend, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The 38-year-old doctor first met AH, in 2001 during one of her work visits to Egypt as she used to regularly visit the country and carry out surgeries.

Over the years they became close friends as his mother was also her patient.

Talking to investigators the victim said, "One day, he told me that he works in Dubai and offered help to open a clinic there. Since then, I have visited Dubai several times and was convinced of establishing a clinic with AH's assistance.

"In 2014, I came to Dubai accompanied by my brother and handed AH US$120,000 for setting up the clinic. During this visit, AH proposed me, but I refused as I do not stay in Dubai."

AH failed to open the clinic and embezzled the amount.

The victim did not lodge any complaint against him considering her relationship with his family.

Early this year, the accused asked the doctor to come to Dubai and follow up the progress of the proposed clinic.

"I arrived on March 13, at around midnight. I waited at the airport for about 3 hours but he did not come to pick me up, although I informed him about my arrival via WhatsApp. I made hotel booking at International City and I checked in at around 3am,” she told investigators.

The victim informed AH about her accommodation via text message. Next day they exchanged hotel room number but she wanted to meet him at the reception.

"At around 9.16am, I got a message from him asking me to open my door. I opened the door and was shocked to see him at the doorstep. He immediately got in and stated getting physical."

The doctor pulled away from the accused and rebuked him.

He then turned aggressive, gagged her mouth by one hand, and overpowered her.

The accused pushed the doctor onto the bed and raped her. Later she rushed to the bathroom to wash herself.

"After about ten minutes, I got out of the bathroom and but he was gone," she said.

“I had nail scratch marks on my face in addition to other injuries that I sustained while resisting him,” she said.

The doctor who did not know anyone else in Dubai did not know what to do. She went to a shopping mall to forget the episode and sent a message to his mother in Egypt telling her what her son did to her.

She went back to the room but could not sleep.

She then contacted a friend in the USA and told her what happened. At her friend's advice she got in touch with a lawyer who in turn suggested her to lodge a police complain.

Two days after the crime, the doctor, who was still in a state of shock and scared, lodged a complaint with police.

Police retrieved CCTV footage and saw the accused coming to her room the same time she mentioned.

They then arrested the accused from Dubai Marina.

AH admitted being friends with the doctor but denied raping her.

He also denied visiting her in her room and claimed that she meet him near Dragon Mart.

However, forensic report show accused's DNA on victim's body, her dress and under garments.

When asked why she did not report the crime on the same day, the victim said that she was shocked, scared and didn't know anybody in the country.

The court will reconvene on June 29.
