570 fined for spitting in public in Al Ain

If you visit the eastern oasis town of Al Ain at the week end, make sure to clear your throat before going there as spitting in public will cost you money.

But if you can not help it, then be sure you are on your own away from the eyes of government inspectors prowling for offenders.

At the week end, those inspectors caught 570 people, mostly Asians, for spitting in public and all of them were fined. They were also on the look for cigarette butt throwers, 370 of whom were also fined.

The measures were part of a week end campaign launched by Al Ain Municipality to end what it described as “uncivilized and unhealthy” behaviour.

Officials, quoted by the Arabic language daily Alittihad, said the campaign included deployment of a large number of municipal inspectors mainly at “Asian workers-infested areas” but they did not specify the fines in such offences.

The paper said the campaign targeted both pedestrians and drivers who commit such violations and “hurt the image and environment of the city.”

Officials said the campaign, which will continue in the coming weeks, targeted areas with large workers’ concentrations including the town centre and the industrial area, adding that more areas would be covered in the future.
