An Asian is on trial in Abu Dhabi on charges of murdering a 67-year-old man of the same nationality to avenge the death of his brother.
The defendant told the prosecutor that he set the victim’s car ablaze to avenge his brother, who he said was killed by that man at home nearly six years ago.
During hearings on Monday, the defendant retracted his previous statement, saying he had nothing to do with the murder.
He told court that the victim stopped his car in Baniyas and asked him to bring a liquid bottle from the boot after checking the engine.
“The defendant told court that he lit a cigarette near the car, not realizsng that the liquid is flammable. He said the car then caught fire, leading to the man’s death,” the Arabic language daily 'Emarat Al Youm' said without identifying the defendant and the victim.
