The Dubai Criminal Court has sentenced a 43-year-old Indian national to three years in prison for attempting to bribe a Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department employee to issue family visas for six ineligible people and residence visa to an overstayer in the UAE.

Fines totaling Dh7,980 had accumulated against the last person for staying illegally for 356 days in the UAE.

The accused approached the DNRD staffer in May 2014 and offered him a bribe of Dh10,000 in return for regularising the seven cases.
The employee informed his superior who asked him to carry on with the bribe offer so as to catch him red handed.

The employee promised to get the visas ready and fixed the time and place for receiving the bribe.

The accused gave the employee Dh3,000 and promised to give him the balance of Dh7,000 later.  When the money was being handed over, police rushed in to arrest the accused.
