Cameras catch RTA staff embezzling Dh93k

An employee of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has been accused of misappropriating Dh93,000 from the RTA’s accounts.

Cameras in an RTA customer service centre caught 38-year-old AHT, UAE citizen, receiving two suitcases containing Dh93,000 and Dh62,700 and handing over only one containing Dh62,700 to the company.

An internal probe was launched by RTA after discovering a short-fall of Dh93,000 in amounts collected from customers.

The accused initially denied the charges but, confronted with statements by an accountant and three RTA staffers and CCTV footage, he broke down and admitted to embezzling the money because he had taken a number of loans from banks.

He asked his superiors not to take legal action and promised to reimburse the misappropriated money.

Dubai Public Prosecution has asked for a criminal trial of the accused.
