A Pakistani who was about to be deported by Abu Dhabi authorities, was arrested for his involvement in car thefts in Dubai in 2009, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

TKR, 38, jobless, was arrested by Abu Dhabi Police in 2011 and was put in custody for deportation.

“The accused was brought from Abu Dhabi to Dubai for investigating a car theft in 2009. The accused admitted to stealing cars with help of two people, one of whom was an Omani who bought the stolen cars,” testified Sergeant Mohammed Abdul Rahim.

In the first car theft, the uncle of the victim, OKB, 51, Pakistani driver, testified that at around 11pm on Thursday June 25, 2009, his nephew stopped his car, a Toyota Corolla, near his accommodation and went home after locking the car.

On the following day at 8am, he did not find the car where he had parked it. So he informed the police.

Police investigated the complaint and found out through its sources that TKR was involved in the theft of the car. Police also found out that the suspect was in the custody of Abu Dhabi authorities for deportation. He was referred to Dubai in March 2011.

Confronting him with the theft of the car, he admitted to breaking the car’s window and operating its engine by cutting the switch wires and connecting them to on another with the help of someone called ‘Zahed’ who is still at large.

He added that they drove the car to Sharjah Industrial Area where they sold it to an Omani for Dh9,500.

The Court will reconvene on June 2.

The accused is also on trial before the Court in five other car theft cases which will be heard on June 11.
