Dubai’s police arrested a man and a woman on charges of stealing from 13 jewelry shops and said all the loot had been recovered.

Most shop owners were surprised when police returned the stolen items to them as they had not known they had been burgled, according to a senior police officer.

“The man and the woman from the same family would detract the attention of the worker while one of them would take a small item and leave,” said Major General Khalil Al Mansouri, assistant police commander for criminal investigation.

He said the couple had been watched by plainclothes cops who suspected their movements through the gold market.

“When a jeweler reported a theft, our men arrested those couple….they took them to their house and were surprised to find all the stolen items there,” Mansouri told the Dubai-based Arabic language daily Emirat Alyoum.

“All the stolen items have been recovered and returned to their owners…most of them were surprised as they did not even know they had been stolen,” he added without identifying the arrested couple.
