The number of violations of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs in Dubai in December 2011 was 65, compared with 58 cases during the December of 2010, a rise of over 12 per cent.

According to the statistics of Dubai Police, all such violators were charged in presence, and not in absentia.

This comes despite the launch of an awareness campaign aimed at preventing hotel guests from driving their cars while drunk. The campaign was launched by the Dubai Traffic Department in cooperation with the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing in Dubai and a number of hotels in the emirate.

The awareness campaign involves offering alternative modes of travel to dissuade hotels guests from driving their cars under the influence of alcohol, and provide them with taxis or to persuade the customer to stay overnight at the hotel to prevent traffic accidents.
