Drug courier’s jail sentence doubled

A 59-year-old Italian transit passenger, who hid over 2kg of cocaine in his underwear, had his five-year jail sentence doubled by the Dubai Court of Appeal.

 MR now has to serve ten years in jail as the Court of Appeal doubled the sentence of the lower court.

MR was also ordered to pay Dh50,0000 fine by both courts.

According to the records, a police officer who was on duty on May 10, suspected a transit passenger who looked worried.

“I waited for him at the inspection point. Searching his body, I noticed an abnormal swelling in the area under his belly. In the inspection room, officers found out that he was wearing three pieces of underwear one on top of the other. He was hiding seven packets between them. The anti-narcotics officer was informed and the visitor was arrested,” testified Isaac Ismaeel.

The transit passenger MR carried 2.058kg of cocaine.

MR was also ordered to be deported after serving his jail sentence.
