Ajman’s authorities seized nearly 230 Vimto boxes contaminated with bacteria and fungi and tests showed they were produced by a Dubai-based company, press reports said on Thursday.
Municipal inspectors seized the 250-gm bottles at many groceries and supermarkets after reports by the shops themselves that most of the bottles contain bacteria, fungi and gel-like substances.
Officials said they had asked Dubai’s authorities to act against the producing company as it is based in the emirate.
“We found that the bottles produced in November are the most contaminated products….those produced in others months are contaminated but to a lesser extent,” said Humaid Al Mualla, director of the health and environment section at the Ajman Municipality.
“We have informed Dubai Municipality to act against that company and confiscate all contaminated bottles there…we asked them to check whether the company’s new products are clean and meet specifications…we hope they will take measures against the company for such offences.”
Mualla said all bottles withdrawn from the market were produced by Aujan company in Dubai, adding that such products pose a serious health hazard.
A large quantity of contaminated Vimto bottles produced by the same firm were seized in Fujeirah last week.
