Husband accused of killing Japanese stewardess in Dubai

Published

A Japanese flight stewardess found strangled at her apartment in Dubai could have been murdered by her husband although he had informed the police about her death, a newspaper said on Thursday.

Dubai-based Al Bayan Arabic language daily quoted police sources as saying the Tunisian man had been arrested on murder charges after forensic examination showed the victim had been strangled from the back.

The sources told the paper that a film taken from the building’s security cameras showed the man leaving his apartment nearly half an hour after the estimated time of death of the woman.

They said police arrested the Tunisian after he gave contradicting statements and that his marriage document presented to the police was not official as it was in Japanese language and signed only by the couple.

The film showed that the victim had returned home from work around 6.05am and her presumed husband left about 6.40am.

“The film showed that the defendant was the only one who was in the apartment at that time….forensic examination showed that the woman was strangled from the back neck and her lean body shows that the defendant could have forced her on her stomach, grabbed her legs by his and strangled her from the back,” the paper said, quoting a police source.

“The man claimed he found his wife dead when he returned home from work in the evening….the examination showed she died in the morning nearly eight hours after he reported her death.”

The paper said police also found a large sum of money and jewellery belonging to the stewardess in the defendant’s car.

“The body was taken to Rashid Hospital for examination which showed she died just after she returned home…the film showed no one else had been in the apartment and there were no signs of violence at all,” one source said.

Earlier, it was reported that theJapanese flight stewardess was found strangled at her flat in Dubai.

Victim’s Tunisian husband had produced a marriage certificate in Japanese language. The document was sent to the Japanese embassy for translation to verify his claims.

The woman was found dead by the suspect at her apartment in Al Nahda two weeks ago and forensic tests showed she was strangled.

“The Tunisian man has been arrested as a suspect in the murder of the stewardess,” said Issa Sabt, acting director of the family prosecution.

“He said he knew of the victim’s death just after he returned home while the coroner said the death occurred nearly eight hours before examination.”

Sabt said the prosecution had asked the building supervisors to provide films taken by security cameras to check whether any one else had entered the victim’s apartment while her husband was at work.

“The suspect is still denying he has anything to do with the murder on the grounds the couple had no problems or disputes…the prosecution will not rush in indicting the man pending completion of investigations,” he told the Arabic language daily Emirat Alyoum.
