Illegal taxi driver offered bribe to RTA officers

A Pakistani driver allegedly offered an RTA inspector a bribe of up to Dh1,000 for not fining him for illegally picking up passengers in his private car, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

RTA inspectors SA and WM were on duty on Riqqa Road when they saw a private car stopping and three Gulf nationals getting into it.

“Before moving, I stopped the driver and asked him about the passengers. The passengers said the driver had offered to drop them at a hotel for Dh20.  When I told him that this is illegal and asked my colleague to bring the device for issuing fines, the driver asked me: “How much do you want? One hundred ?  Two hundred? One thousand ? Don’t fine me and let me go. He repeated his offer after I pretended that I did not understand what he meant,” SA told investigators.

SA and his colleague WM called the police after issuing him the RTA fine and lodged a complaint about the offer of bribe.

The Court will give its verdict on January 20.
