Killer sentenced to death in Abu Dhabi

A criminal court in Abu Dhabi sentenced an Asian man to death after he was convicted of murdering a work mate, newspapers reported on Wednesday.

The court said it handed down the sentence after it could not reach any of the victim’s relatives at the defendant’s request to seek pardon in return for diya (blood money).

The defendant had told court he killed his work mate in self defence in 2007 when the victim tried to strangle him. He said he fled to the kitchen and threatened the victim with a knife but that the victim tried again to attack him, prompting him to stab the victim many times at their room in the capital.
