A Syrian sales manager allegedly stole his co-worker's wallet from office and used his credit card to buy mobile phones valued at Dh5,500, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The 27-year–old victim MF, 27, Indian sales manager told the police that on April 2, at around 11am he put his wallet on a table during an official meeting he had with other colleagues in the meeting room in the Dubai Airport’s free zone.

“I had in my wallet a total of Dh500 in different denominations, ID card, driving licence, and two credit cards. The meeting finished after about an hour and I left my wallet there while leaving.

"After about 45 minutes I realised that so I went to the meeting room and searched for the wallet but in vain.

I"n less than 40 minutes, I received a text message from First Gulf Bank informing me about the deduction of Dh2,799 by an electronic shop at Gitex. Two minutes later, I received another message from the same bank informing about the deduction of Dh2,699 by the same shop.

"I called the bank and asked him to cancel the card and freeze it. At around 2:30pm on the same day, I received a call from the security staff at Dubai Trade Centre informing me about finding my wallet,” he said.

The victim went to the centre and upon checking his wallet he found that the two credit cards were missing in addition to the Dh500 cash amount.

Reviewing the footage of the CCTV at the centre , the victim recognized his colleague MT, so he lodged a complaint against him with the police.

A saleswoman told the police that the accused had approached the shop between 12pm and 2pm.

“He first bought a Samsung for Dh2,799 using a credit card, which I swapped to deduct the amount and he signed on the receipt. Then he roamed around in the shop and picked up an iPhone 6. He used the same credit card for paying Dh2,699. He also signed on the payment receipt,” she said.

The accused admitted to stealing his colleagues’ wallet.

The court will give its verdict on May 13.
