A Bangladeshi worker who allegedly stole about Dh20,000, claimed  he had taken only Dh21, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

The French events manager of a company club told investigators that he received a phone call from a staff in the club telling him that he had noticed that the locks of drawers were broken.

Checking the drawers, officials in the club discovered that Dh19,000 was missing, besides a quantity of coins, so police was informed.

Reviewing CCTV footage, MR, 28, Bangladeshi, was seen breaking locks of drawers and stealing a round box while pretending to be cleaning the area with a vacuum machine.

Workers and officials in the club testified that MR had left before his working hours were over.

Police lifted fingerprints from the drawers, which proved to be those of MR.

The accused was arrested and he admitted to stealing but only Dh20. However, he later told investigators that the amount he stole was Dh52.

Then he changed his confession and told investigators that the correct amount stolen was Dh21.

The court will give its sentence on February 25.
