NYE accident: Woman driver faces five charges

Prosecutors in Ras Al Khaimah have filed five counts of charges against a woman who drove a car without a licence on the New Year eve in Ras Al Khaimah and caused the death of one man and injured three others.

The charges include killing a man by accident, injuring three, driving without a licence, damaging public property and driving carelessly.

A second Arab woman was charged of using her driving licence to rent a car and allowing her friend to drive the vehicle.

According to Emrat Alyoum newspaper, the 22-year-old woman who caused the accident has remained in detention while the her friend, 26, has been released on bail pending trial.

It quoted prosecution sources as saying a police report showed the main defendant was driving carelessly as she was talking to her friend in the car.

“As a result, the car got out of its track and hit the pavement where four people were standing…one Asian man aged 44 years was killed while his friends suffered from medium to serious injuries,” a source said.
