A Pakistani trader, accused of smuggling in more than 41kg of the Tramadol tablets in a shipping container, claimed that he did not know that the container had the narcotic drug inside, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Dubai Police’s Anti-Narcotics Department was informed by Jebel Ali Customs about their suspicion of a container that had arrived from Pakistan. Checking the container without opening it, police did not find anything. However, a ray test showed that it might contain drugs.

Police arrested MAM, 32, trader, testified Corporal Mohammed Abdul Rahman.

“At first, he claimed that he did not know what they were. Later he confessed that he was supposed to hand over the drugs to someone else in the UAE. He was lead to his container and it was opened in front of him,” testified the officer.

Police found large quantities of narcotic tablets in addition to a banned substance. He admitted that it was his intention to sell the banned substance to those who wanted it. He also admitted that it was his intention to hand over the other medicines to SFD but claiming that he did not know that they were Tramadol tablets.

However, medical items were not included in the customs clearance certificate which pointed to the criminal intention of the accused.

Police arranged with the accused to invite SFD who was arrested while receiving the Tramadol tablets in the Naif area.

Other police officers repeated the same testimony.

MAM, 32, is accused of smuggling and possessing for trade purpose a large quantity of drugs, while SFD, 50, visitor is accused of possessing drugs for trade.

The court will reconvene on April 9 for the accused to enter their plea.
