Forty-five kilogrammes of gold, robbed from a transiting African businessman from the reception area of a hotel in Dubai’s Deira area, has been retrieved in a joint operation by Dubai and Sharjah Police, leading to the arrest of a five-member African gang.
According to Dubai Police sources, a businessman from Malawi reported to police on December 21 that he had been robbed of 45 kilogrammess of gold at a Deira hotel where he was staying. He was at the hotel’s reception desk when a gang attacked him from behind and disappeared with a bag containing the precious metal. Police investigations reached the hotel immediately to conduct preliminary investigations.
The victim was in the UAE with two other businessmen who were together carrying 210 kilogrammes of gold.
“The African gang of five was arrested and the gold retrieved from the electrical appliances kept in the gang’s house while they were trying to smuggle it out to an African country,” said sources familiar with the case.
