An Emirati inmate allegedly lit a fire in the cell in protest against not being allowed to meet the director of the jail, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

On October 1, at around 10am, First Corportal Shuaib Issa noticed smoke coming out from an individual cell in which SI, 38, was jailed.

“I rushed there and opened the doors and pulled out SI, who admitted to setting fire to his underwear using a cigarette and throwing it in the corridor leading to the cell as he wanted to meet the prison’s director,” testified the officer.

Instead, SI was referred to the officer on duty.

SI admitted to lighting a fire to the cell in protest against not being allowed to meet the director to complain being put in a solitary cell for two years and not allowing him to take his psycho medicine.

The court will reconvene on February 11.
