Ras Al Khaimah Police on Friday arrested a thief who robbed Dh800,000 in less than five minutes with the help of community members.

Major-General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police, said the operations room received an alert at about 11.40 am on Friday morning and immediately a team set out in action.

The thief, who used a plastic gun, to threaten the staff at the exchange house, was detained with the help of public, he added.

Meanwhile, Brigadier Abdullah Mankhas, Director, CID, RAK Police, said some passers-by had noticed the suspect run out from the exchange house with a bag under his arms. Suspecting something foul, they gave him a chase and nabbed him.

Brigadier Mankhas said that the employees of the exchange house was winding up to close the outlet when the suspect entered with his face covered, showed a plastic gun that was wrapped in a piece of cloth and threatened them before grabbing a bag with Dh800,000 in it and fleeing the place.

No sooner than he fled than the staff sounded an alarm connected to RAK Police Central Operations Room, and ran after the suspect.

Initial investigations reveal that the suspect arrived in the UAE 18 days ago on a labour visa issued from another emirate, Brigadier Mankhas added.
He has been handed over to the Public Prosecution.
