Young girls first pampered and then neglected by the families are more prone to exploitation and consequences could be more serious for the drug-addicted girls than boys, says Amal Al Faqaai, a social worker in public administration to combat drug in Dubai Police.
Revealing story of a 26-year-old girl who has been neglected by her family since the age of 13, Al Faqaai told Arabic daily Emarat Al Youm newspaper that she was exploited and made a drug addict by her boyfriend.
She was recently arrested along with other drug addicts and now is behind the bar. She initially went hysterical during her meetings with the Dubai Police team, fearing that her family will come to know about her condition.
When questioned, she told police that that her boyfriend is the one who lured her in to this because she loves and trusts him.
“It came to light after a discussion with her that she was the pampered daughter for being the youngest which led her to deviate from the right path at an early age; the family later neglected her completely because they couldn’t control her. Then she looked for someone who could take care of her to live,” Al Faqaai added.
“The family chose easier solutions at all stages in this tragedy, pampering her as a child first and then neglecting her as a teenager. When she became a woman, the family avoided her. At this stage, the parents should have embraced and helped her in this situation,” she added.
Both the parties in this case are wrong because the girl couldn’t get anyone to advise or guide her to distinguish between right and wrong during all this period.
Al Faqaai pointed out that women addicted to drugs are harder to treat than men because they tend to be more volatile in their behaviour especially if they’re abandoned by their families.
