Dubai’s police arrested an Emirati housewife for torturing her housemaid to death, causing injuries to another maid and forcing a third one to escape.

Police said the African maid died of her wounds just before arrival in hospital and forensic examination showed she had been beaten and tortured for a long period of time. The second Asian maid, who suffered from injuries, told police that the woman had tortured her and the other two maids for a long period of time.

The unidentified woman, who lives in Warqa area, denied the charges but her friend told police she had seen her beating the maids many times. Her statements were supported by the woman’s husband, according to the police, who said the friend and the husband were both arrested for hiding information before they were released on bail.

“We are now searching for the third maid, who had escaped that house. The woman’s husband says he is worried about that maid,” said Colonel Saleh Al Rahoomi, director of the Rashidiya police station.

“Examination showed the dead maid had wounds and bruises all over her body…the Asian maid suffered from bruises and swellings on the face…she told us that her employer promised to give her Dh50,000 if she does not report her to the police,” he added, quoted by the Arabic language daily Emirat Alyoum.

Rahoomi said the defendant, in her 40s, had been questioned many times but she still denied the charges despite statements by her friend and the Asian maid.

“The prosecutor has ordered the arrest of the woman, who remains in custody for more interrogation….her friend told us that she had advised her many times to stop using violence against the maids but that she did not heed her advice.”
