A Filipina escaped a rape attempt after she pretended to agree to have sex with the attacker, the Dubai Criminal Court heard on Sunday.

MJL, 28, testified that as she stepped out of a supermarket on Al Wasl Road on March 11 at around 3.30am, she was surprised when a man in front of her tried to drag her down a narrow lane.

“I screamed for help but he cupped my mouth and dragged me between the old houses there. He groped me and tried to insert his hand into my clothes. I stopped him.

"But he tried again to push his hand into my trousers to grope me. I stopped him and told him that there’s no need for violence and asked him if he has a car, but he did not reply. Then I asked him if he had a room. When he pulled away his hand and I was free from his grip, I took a stone from the road and hit him. I managed to escape from the scene,” she said.

MJL told the court: “I could not complain to the police immediately as my visa was not yet stamped on the passport. Two months after having my visa on the passport, I saw my attacker in a restaurant in the same area. I knew that he works there.

"I informed the police who asked me to identify the attacker. I went to the restaurant manager and told him about the incident. He gathered all the workers and I identified the attacker from the parade and police arrested him,” she testified.

A police officer testified that MYA, 27, Bangladeshi waiter, confessed to attacking the victim by dragging her from the main street near the Grand Jumeira Mosque to a narrow street. He admitted that she resisted him and that’s why he could not force her to have sex with him.

He confessed that she had stoned him before running away.

The court will issue its verdict on November 14.
