A court in Abu Dhabi ordered a local hotel to pay a European woman Dh200,000 in damages after she started to have epileptic fits following the fall of a wardrobe shelf on her head at the hotel, a newspaper reported on Thursday. The woman had sought Dh20 million in compensation after a medical report presented to court showed the accident caused her 50 per cent damage. The unnamed woman had mounted a social network campaign to muster support for her case, saying she was also sacked from work following the accident.

The woman accused the hotel management of negligence and failure to comply with safety measures during her stay in the hotel nearly five years ago.

The woman told court that she was putting her clothes and other personal items inside the wardrobe during her stay at the hotel in July 2008 when the 2.2-kg shelf fell off on her head, causing serious injury.

“The judge heard the case that she has suffered from epileptic fits since she had that accident while doctors assessed the head damage at 50 per cent,” the Arabic language daily Emirat Al Youm said.
