A Saudi appeals court upheld an earlier court sentence and sentenced a local school teacher to death after he was convicted of raping 13 girls aged between six and 12 years over a period of four years, a newspaper said on Wednesday.
The court in the western Saudi town of Makkah sentenced the defendant to death after finding him guilty of torturing and raping the 13 children, some of whom identified him in a queue at prison the Western Red Sea port of Jeddah, where he committed his crimes.
“The appeals court referred the death sentence to the supreme court in Riyadh to give a final endorsement,” Sabq Arabic language daily said.
Saudi police seized the teacher, who is married and has four children, in 2011 following a massive manhunt across the Kingdom.
The arrest of the 42-year-old man came just a week after he grabbed his latest victim at a rest house in Jeddah. Nine-year-old Maha recounted her ordeal to the police and begged them to kill the rapist when they get him.
Newspapers in the oil-rich Gulf country said the rapist had stalked little girls near rest houses and wedding halls in Jeddah and gave them sweets to lure them into his car.
