Saudi customs inspectors have foiled 1,051 attempts to smuggle drugs, weapons and money on King Fahd Causeway over the past seven months.

Several people have been arrested in connection with the smuggling operations that also involved undeclared money, liquor, jewelry and other items, Saudi newspapers said, citing figures by the Customs department.

Most of the seized items were destined for abroad and the smugglers included Saudis and expatriates, the papers said.

The 25-km King Fahd Causeway was built in 1985 at a cost of around $2.5 billion to link the world’s dominant oil exporter with nearby Bahrain.
