Three get death for rape and murder

The Nuwara-eliya High Court Judge Sumudu Premachandra sentenced three brothers of the same family to death, who had been indicted before the court over several charges including the murder of a person by beating him with a pole and raping the victim’s daughter while dragging her to a cave at Seven Virgin rock, ‘Lankadeepa’ reported.

The accused, who were sentenced to death were, I. Thissera Kamaladas, I. Mahinda Kumar and I. Mohan Raj, brothers of the same family and residents of Norton Bridge police division.

After killing the victim, the third accused, I. Mohan Raj, who dragged the young woman to Seven Virgin rock where he raped her, had been sentenced to 18-years rigorous imprisonment in

addition to the death sentence while ordering him to pay a compensation of Rs. 50,000 to the complainants and a fine of Rs.25,000.

The attorney-general had filed the indictment at the Nuwara-eliya Provincial High Court against the accused for murdering the victim, within its judicial area, by beating him with a pole in its judicial area on or around August 2, 2009 and in addition, the AG filed five charges against the accused including unlawful entrance to the victim’s premises and causing injuries to the victim’s family.

Norton Bridge police conducted the investigations to the crime.
