A woman who said she was raped in New Delhi by an Uber driver plans to sue the smartphone car service in the United States.
High profile New York attorney Douglas Wigdor will represent the unidentified woman. He is looking at asking a United States court to exercise jurisdiction in the case based on the California-headquartered company’s policy originating in the United States, The Guardian reported.
“I can confirm that I have been retained by the young lady who was raped by an Uber driver in Delhi, India, last December. Having met extensively with her and her family while in Delhi, I can only compliment them for their bravery and fortitude during this very difficult time,” Wigdor told Theguardian.com. “We will use all of our resources to vindicate my client’s rights, hold those responsible for their actions and ensure that this doesn’t happen again.”
Since the incident was reported, Delhi police arrested Shiv Kumar Yadav, 32, for the alleged rape and banned the use of Uber. Police also accused the company for failing to check to see if the driver had a clean police record.
Kumar Yadav was charged with rape, kidnapping and criminal intimidation. The 25-year-old victim filed a police complaint after she hired him for a ride home on Dec. 5, the Associated Press reported.
