A 71-year-old doctor from Pennsylvania, US, was arrested on Tuesday with charges of rape and aggravated indecent sexual assault against 12 women.

The pain management doctor allegedly gave these women large quantities of painkillers until they became addicted to these medicines so he could sexually assault them.

His efforts caused the women to become addicted and then baited with refilled prescriptions, police said.

Police further criticized him for treating patients for the advantage 'of his own personal and perverted desires', reports nydailynews.

Majority of the patients were afraid that he would not see them as patients anymore if they rejected his sexual advances.

In 2010 a patient filed a police report claiming sexual assault by the doctor but never followed through with the complaint, police said.

In May 2014, another female patient accused him of assault and that's when police launched another investigation.

One patient review on Vitals.com accused him of over prescribing drugs.

He apparently has 43 years of experience and has been named as a top doctor in Pennsylvania, according to Vitals.com.

Medical records for many of the victims were obtained and reviewed by an independent medical expert in Anesthesiology and Pain Management.

The doctor turned himself in to police on Tuesday following the issue of a warrant for his arrest for charges of rape, aggravated indecent assault, drug delivery by a practitioner, criminal use of a communication facility, indecent assault, possession of a controlled substance and harassment.

He is being held on $375,000 bail.
