Father gets 100-year jail for raping daughter

A High Court Judge in Gampaha, Sri Lanka, sentenced a 48-year-old father to 100 years rigorous imprisonment for raping his 10-year-old daughter, ‘Lankadeepa’ reported.

Attorney General had filed a case against the accused on three counts which were upheld by the judge and ordered him to pay Rs100,000 as compensation to the girl.

The judge also ordered the accused to pay a fine of Rs120,000 for 12 other counts, failing which the accused would face a further 16 years imprisonment.  

A resident of Bemmulla area in Gampaha, the accused had committed the crime for 2 years since August 1, 2012 by raping the girl on numerous occasions.

Upon a complaint lodged by the principal of the school, where the girl was studying, the National Child Protection Authority, had arrested the accused after an investigation, police said.

Retired teacher attempts to abduct an underage boy

A retired female teacher, who had attempted to abduct a 13-year-old boy on a motorcycle, was arrested by the Negombo police Child and Women’s Division, ‘Lankadeepa’ reported.

The 51-year-old woman was a retired teacher from Divulapitiya area while the boy is a grade seven student of St. Anthony’s College in Mankuliya, Negombo.

According to the police investigations, the woman had met the boy at the Negombo beach and after befriending the boy, she had asked the boy to come with her promising to buy pizza and other items.

The woman had told the boy to come near Kotalawala Bridge in Negombo to go with her and not to tell his parents about this.

Later the boy had told the incident to his parents who in turn informed the relatives and they went near the bridge and waited in ambush.

While the woman was about to get the boy into the motorcycle, the party in ambush nabbed and handed her over to the police.

Negombo police are conducting further investigations and making arrangements to produce the suspect before the Negombo magistrate courts.
