Man strangles college housemate

A man convicted of tying up, gagging and strangling a woman who shared his off-campus house at the University of Mary Washington will spend the rest of his life in prison.

News outlets are reporting that 31-year-old Steven Vander Briel of Frederickburg was sentenced to life plus 11 more years for the murder of 20-year-old Grace Mann, whose body was found in April 2015 in the house she shared with Vander Briel and two other female students.

A jury found Vander Briel guilty on all counts in May after prosecutors said he killed the Fairfax County woman out of what they called "flash anger." His lawyers tried an insanity defense, arguing that he was delusional.
