Parents sell their newborn baby for just Dh1,000; arrested

COLOMBO: A three-day old infant born in Wahugapitiya hospital in Pussellawa in Central province, was allegedly sold for Rs35,000 [Dh1,013.6] to a woman from Nainamadama area in Negombo of the Western province.

According to ‘Sunday Lankadeepa’ newspaper, the child’s parents sold the kid on March 18.
 
Pussellawa police has taken the parents into custody along with four others including a 53-year-old woman who had made the purchase.
 
A resident of Labukelle in Nuwara Eliya, the woman gave birth to the baby on March 15 at the Wahugapitiya Hospital.

The arrested suspects are to be produced at the Gampola Magistrate’s Court.

Student goes deaf after principal allegedly hits him

COLOMBO: A 12-year-old student was allegedly beaten by his school principal causing damage to his ear drum.
 
According to a ‘Gossip Lanka News’, Jude Leonard Niranjan Fernando from St. Nicholas’ International College was arrested and released on a personal bond of Rs. 1 million. He is ordered to present himself at the Child Protection Authority every week while inquiry is continuing.
 
The incident took place when a lady teacher complained to the principal of disturbance because of noise in the adjacent Grade 6 classroom. Apparently she had attempted to discipline them but failed and then decided to complain to the principal.
 
Upon receiving the complaint, the principal walked into the said classroom and dealt a severe blow to Ashen Sadipa Silva. The 12-year-old was knocked down by the impact of the blow.
 
Meanwhile, the student said that while he was talking to a group of friends, the principal walked in and shouted, “Ashen, you have not paid school fees even and shouting here.” He added that he could not hear from one ear.
 
He is currently receiving treatment at a hospital and his mother has reported the incident to the Child Protection Authority.
