Watchman rapes an 80-year-old woman

Colombo: A watchman allegedly raped an 80-year-old woman who was living alone in a hut.

The man was working at Liyanwala Leena Estate and the old woman was living in a hut adjoining the estate, ‘Mawbima’ reported.

The arrested suspect, 43, committed crime between 9pm and 10pm.

The victim, who had leased one-and-half acres from the estate, was living alone in the hut by cultivating greens and selling them.

On the day of the incident, she saw someone moving around near the hut and went out to see with a small lamp and a torch to enquire. But she was dragged into the hut and raped her by the man covering his face.

After struggling with the culprit, she was able to remove the face cover thus identified the watchman, police said.

The suspect was to be produced before the magistrate court while police continued investigations.
