£30 million

Football might be the latest high-profile victim of the recession, with the January transfer window generating barely a fifth of the spending achieved last year. Total gross spending for Premier League clubs was £30 million (Dh176m), down from 2009's £170m, Deloitte said in a report on Monday. It is a new low for English clubs, since January 2003 when it was £35m.

$1.4m

Failed US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin raised $1.4 million (Dh5.14m) in the last six months of 2009 for her political action committee, according to Federal Election Commission records. She was one of three prospective 2012 presidential candidates to take in more than $1m last year for their PACs.

$3.1m

The mansion Michael Jackson rented in Las Vegas, which became a meeting point for the late singer's grieving fans, has been sold for $3.1 million (Dh11.38m) in cash. The sale of the 1,400 sqm house was the city's biggest in almost one year, according to brokers Las Vegas Fine Estates.

£700,000

Trevor Eve is reportedly the BBC's highest-paid actor, pocketing a cool £700,000 (Dh4.10m) for each series of Waking The Dead, which reportedly costs £1m per episode. Surprisingly, that's more than what David Tennant earned for his role as Doctor Who, but it's no surprise that his pay cheque is now under scrutiny.
