Societe Generale, the French bank hit by a trading scandal, is interested in a possible merger with France's La Banque Postale (Post Office Bank), French business daily Les Echos reported on Monday.
Les Echos said any such deal was a "long way from being finalised" and could be complicated but the newspaper added that the two banks had held early discussions about a possible merger.
Officials at SocGen could not be immediately reached for comment on the matter.
"For Patrick Werner (Banque Postale chief executive), opening up the Banque Postale's capital to an ally is a priority," a source familiar with the matter told Les Echos.
La Banque Postale is owned by France's Post Office.
Last year, La Banque Postale and SocGen announced a partnership in the area of payment systems. (Reuters)
