Agility, a leading global logistics services provider and Abu Dhabi-based Borouge have broken ground for a new logistics hub in Shanghai that will receive more than 600,000 tonnes of polyolefins (polypropylene and polyethylene) annually.
The polymers are used in a wide range of applications including extruded pipe, films and packaging, terraforming and fibres, as well as household goods.
The 70,000 sq m facility, which will mainly serve the China market, will be completed by 2009 and will be fully operational by May 2010, employing some 120 dedicated Agility staff.
The groundbreaking was conducted by Ahmed Omar Abdulla, board member of Borouge and Chairman of Borouge Marketing Projects Steering Committee.
The hub will receive the polymer granules in bulk containers directly from the Borouge Middle East gateway situated at Ruwais in Abu Dhabi.
A 30,000 sq m compound manufacturing unit will also be built for Borouge on the same site in Shanghai, producing 50,000 tonnes of compounds each year for use in automotive, domestic appliance, power tool and electrical applications.
When completed most of this compounded product will sold to customers in the Shanghai area.
Borouge is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, one of the world's largest oil and gas companies, and Borealis a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions. Borouge's state-of-the-art petrochemical complex is located at Ruwais.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's Service Sales Corporation (SSC), marketer of Servis brand has signed an agreement with Agility Logistics for its distribution centre (DC).
Under the agreement, Agility will provide and manage a central DC facility – covering more than 100,000 sq ft – for SSC. This DC will enable SSC to consolidate its stocks from various sources and send more efficient shipments across its nationwide network of shoe stores.
"SSC is doubling its business every three years and distribution excellence is at the core of this growth plan. We have decided to partner with Agility to meet our distribution needs," said SSC.
