The Australian government is investigating whether national law has been broken after an Australian-owned ship was seized by the United Arab Emirates with a cargo of North Korean weapons bound for Iran.

Shipping Minister Anthony Albanese on Sunday confirmed that the UAE had recently seized the weapons aboard an Australian-owned, Bahamas-flagged cargo ship, the ANL Australia.

Albanese told Nine Network television the case will be referred to police if Australian sanctions against North Korean and Iran have been breached.

The ship is owned by Melbourne-based Australian shipping company ANL, which is in turn owned by France’s CMA CGM Group, the third-largest container shipping line in the world.

ANL Melbourne manager David Pratt declined to comment.
