Gulftainer has embarked on a joint venture with Turkey's Demas International that will focus on transport and logistics.

The new company will combine Demas International's expertise in logistics, trucking and warehousing in Turkey with Sharjah-based Gulftainer's terminal, port and transport capabilities and longstanding links with shipping lines.

The partnership will offer opportunities to explore other trucking, logistics, warehousing, freight forwarding and supply chain and inland container depot businesses in Turkey and the wider region.

Turkey is seen as a key strategic link between Europe, the Middle East region and Asia.

The project is Gulftainer's fourth overseas venture, adding to those in Kuwait, Pakistan and the Comoros Islands. The new venture will trade under the Demas International name.

"Our company has operated and managed the container terminals in Sharjah and Khor Fakkan, which have become synonymous with record-breaking performance and reliability for more than 30 years," said Peter Richards, Gulftainer Director and General Manager.

"We realised three years ago that we had much to contribute to activities outside the UAE in the broader field of transport and logistics and our recent international ventures have reflected this policy."

He said the partnership with Demas International in a part of the world that was not only expanding rapidly but shared close ties with the UAE was a strategic step for Gulftainer.

"We are confident that we will have many reasons to celebrate this Turkish link in the years to come," he said.

Gulftainer's Khor Fakkan Container Terminal (KCT) has seen an increase in volumes of around 20 per cent during the first half of 2008 compared to the same period last year.

The transport and logistics industry is growing at a fast pace in the UAE and KCT has expanded to meet demand and avoid port congestion and delays.

The first phase of the terminal's expansion was completed in 2006 and the latest berth development, which will add another 400m, is due to be completed by the end of this year.
