The seeds for the Dubai Metro project were sown in 1992, when a feasibility study found that Dubai could no longer rely only on roads to cater to its escalating traffic demands.

The project is now being delivered in two phases. The first involves the Red Line, which is now operational. Construction started on March 21, 2006.

Throughout the construction work the Roads and Transport Authority has remained committed to the best global safety standards.

The first trials were held on September 20, 2008.

More than 10,000 workers supervised by 500 engineers toiled 24 hours a day in a determined effort to make sure that the Dubai Metro's Red Line opens on schedule on September 9, 2009.
