The Department of Transport (DoT) announced yesterday Mawaqif's 2010 roll out plan for the implementation of paid parking in Abu Dhabi during a press conference.

Mawaqif was introduced to the public in October 2009 with the aim of providing a world-class car parking management system in the capital.

Mawaqif's initiatives will be expedited in 2010. The implementation of paid parking services will be introduced in 19 areas around the capital, covering a total of 29,776 parking bays. Every month, paid parking will be introduced in one or two areas of the city.

The implementation will be rolled out every quarter: Quarter 1 – the area between Corniche Road and Sheikh Khalifa Street; Quarter 2 – the area between Sheikh Hazaa bin Zayed First, Al Falah Street, Airport Road and Baniyas Street; Quarter 3 – the area between end of Hamdan Street, end of Al Nahyan Street, and Cornish Street; and; Quarter 4 – the area between Airport Road, Al Nahyan street, and Sheikh Hazzaa bin Zayed First Street.

The launch of Mawaqif brought with it the implementation of the paid parking system in some of Abu Dhabi's most congested commercial areas.

Like most of Abu Dhabi, these areas suffered from lack of sufficient parking spaces, illegal parking behaviours, exploitation of private parking, failure to comply with terms of residential parking, and more.

Three months since the launch, Mawaqif had already made a major impact on the lives of residents and visitors in areas where paid parking system was put in place. The general aesthetics of the streets also improved as a result.

Other positive impacts include the following: parking spaces became readily available, abandoned vehicles were all removed, cars from showrooms and car rental companies were also removed, people looked at car pooling as an alternative, increased turnover for the underground parking structures, and previous parking reservations were all terminated.

Part of the roll out plan for this year is the introduction of alternative parking solutions.
