The Antonov An-12, a Soviet-era cargo aircraft, has been temporarily banned from UAE airspace by the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) for reasons of safety.
The authority said it was prompted to blacklist the Ukrainian-manufactured four-engine turboprop aircraft, effective from January 8, following a number of recent accidents involving it.
"This action is the result of the numerous incidents involving this type of aircraft, and was considered necessary to ensure the safety of the travelling public until the GCAA completes its investigations in accordance with national and international civil aviation standards and regulations," said Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA. The aircraft has a range of more than 3,000km, and can carry a payload of 20 tonnes.
