The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) recently announced the design and build contract for the first 9.5km phase of Al Sufouh Tramway has been awarded to a consortium comprising Alstom and Besix.

Abdul Majid Al Khaja, CEO of RTA Rail Agency stated the Dh3,888 million project calls for the design and construction of 13 stations and a depot and will have multimodal interchange stations with the Red Line. These include Mall of the Emirates, Marina and Jumeirah Lake Towers.

The first phase is scheduled to be completed and commence operations by April 11, 2011.

Proposed to run from Dubai Marina/Jumeirah Beach residence via Dubai Media City and Knowledge Village to Madinat Jumeirah, Mall of the Emirates and Burj Al Arab as well as other projects under planning phase such as Jumeirah Hills, the first phase will be connected to the Palm Monorail and will not only be an effective solution to ease traffic snarls but will also be a tourist attraction for the emirate.

Currently around 19 stations are being planned for the entire 14.5km tram stretch, with six stations planned for the 5km Phase II. It is designed to cater to the commuting needs of around 180,000 residents.

Abdulredha Abu Al Hassan, Director of Rail Planning and Design Department in the Rail Agency said: "The design and operation of the tram system is harmonious, meets international standards and is compatible with the urban environment. The front design of the tram is inspired by the shape of a diamond and each tram measures 44 metres in length and has a capacity to accommodate 305 passengers. It will not require overhead electrical cables as electricity will be supplied through a safe ground cable system. Each tram will cater for bicycle space while the stations will have provisions for bicycle parking."

"Al Safouh Tramway will be the world's first tram network to use platform screen doors fully aligned with the trains' doors opening and closing mechanism. It is also the world's first tram project with fully enclosed air-conditioned stations."
