The first phase of road upgrading work at the capital's Salam Street is set to begin, according to the Abu Dhabi Municipality, which announced several traffic diversions and measures to control the flow of vehicles.
The initial phase involves closing several parts of Salam Street and introducing a traffic diversion system and detours. These will be made available while construction goes on in Salam Street as part of the comprehensive transformation plan under the Salam Street Project.
Salam Street will be closed from the Corniche Hospital intersection up to the intersection No9 leading to Abu Dhabi Mall. Another stretch to be closed will be from intersection No12 between Salam and Mina Street, going towards Bayed Port until intersection No41 near the Capital Hotel.
The Abu Dhabi Municipality has taken several measures to ensure smooth flow of traffic despite the closure of some key roads during this initial construction phase in an effort to reduce inconvenience to the public.
The Salam Project has been initiated by the Abu Dhabi Municipality in response to the spiralling urban growth and population increase in Abu Dhabi, and also as an effort to further cement the city's position as a truly modern metropolis on par with the best in the world. The Salam Street Project will pave the way for a major transformation in the road network and will make possible the construction of a highway with a series of tunnels and junctions. Upon its completion, motorists will be able to travel through Salam Street without any traffic signals from Sheikh Zayed Bridge until the Mina Zayed area.
