Emirates Aluminium (Emal) has awarded an EPC contract for the seawater desalination and demineralisation systems to Aqua EPC, the regional arm of Aqua Engineering GmbH of Germany and part of the Christ Water Technology Group.

The initial contract is in excess of Dh42 million.

According to a release on the company website, in Phase one the installed capacity of the seawater desalination system will be 20,304 cubic metres.

"Using the combined resources of the Christ Water Technology Group, our long regional experience, especially in seawater desalination, as well as [our] strong presence in the UAE have enabled us to win this contract," said Kai-Uwe Buerger, Managing Director of Aqua EPC.

The engineering, procurement and construction management services contract for the Emal smelter is being carried out by SNC-Lavalin.

Emal, a joint venture established by Dubai Aluminium Company and the Mubadala Development Company, has developed a Greenfield aluminium smelter with power generation facilities at Khalifa Port and Industrial Port in Taweelah.
