Dubai-South Korea to co-operate on energy. (REUTERS)
A delegation, represented by Dubai Energy Sector, visited South Korea to co-operate and explore latest technologies and practices used in the field of nuclear energy. The visit was in line with UAE policy for civil usage of nuclear energy and Dubai Nuclear Energy Committee decree issuance by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, to undertake the responsibility of supervising activities related to civil usage of nuclear energy for Dubai. The Dubai delegation was led by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy, Chairman of Dubai Nuclear Energy Committee and MD and CEO of Dewa, along with other members.
The delegation met President and CEO Ssang Su Kim of the South Korean power provider Kepco and senior officials and conducted a field visit to a nuclear power plant. The two parties discussed the possible co-operation areas as well as recent available technologies in the field of civil nuclear energy (electricity).
In addition, the delegation visited Doosan Heavy Industries and met Doosan CEO Shim Kyu Sang while visiting a manufacturing firm for heavy nuclear energy equipment used in NPP civil programme.
Al Tayer said: "Our visit was in line with Dubai's interest to enhance the knowledge and expand co-operation with international companies such as Kepco. [It was a part of efforts] to meet future energy needs through the use of a variety of sources to generate electricity and water, focusing on the international standards in environment preservation and safety in line with UAE's Federal Policy."
He added" "The peaceful use of nuclear technology in electricity generation comes under Dubai's long-term initiatives towards the need of support and creating opportunities for alternatives sources of energy, using the best international proven technologies which in turn support the national economy and positive impact on to the UAE."
