A free medical camp for labourers and other low-paid employees will be held tomorrow at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

The change of season and arrival of colder weather have led to an increase in the number of cases of viral conjunctivitis, which causes fever, sore eyes and asthma attacks.

Doctors told Emirates Business the number of patients with these symptoms always rose in winter, and some workers living in labour camps in Sharjah, Sonapur and other areas had been affected.

The medical camp has been organised by Dubai's Bukhatir Group Dubai and Zulekha Healthcare Group as part of their corporate social responsibility programmes. A panel of five specialists from the Zulekha Hospital and paramedical staff will examine workers without charge, and free medicines will be provided.

"This is the first time we have organised a free medical camp for workers," V Ramachandran, General Manager of Touchwood Décor and Furniture, part of the Bukhatir Group, told Emirates Business.

"The camp will be open from 8am to noon and workers without insurance cover will be examined and referred to specialists," said Ramachandran.

Free transport to the camp will be provided from National Paints, Rolla Square and Sonapur.
