Hyundai Heavy Industries Co, the world's largest shipbuilder, has won a $767.6 million order to build five supertankers for Oman Shipping Company, the two companies said on Tuesday.

Hyundai said in a filing to the Korea Exchange it would deliver the ships by December 30, 2011. A senior official from the government-owned Oman Shipping Company confirmed the order.

"Yes we have placed these orders, and it is part of our plans to expand our fleet," said the official, who declined to give more details.

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co, the world's third-largest shipbuilder said via a filing on the Korea Exchange that it had confirmed an order worth $770 million to build five Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) for Oman Shipping.

Oman Shipping is expected to take delivery of its first VLCC sometime in December this year. (Reuters)
