The National Media Council is playing a vital role in the development of the media, and in the broader sense, in the sustainable development of the country itself, said its top official.
Saqr Ghobash, Chairman of NMC, who is also the Labour Minister, told Emirates News Agency (Wam) in an interview that The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, are keen on providing further opportunities to media establishments in the country to discharge their responsibilities. The NMC is working under their directives to have greater freedom of expression and improve the media.
He said the new draft law for media activities "is a qualitative shift in the UAE in regard to its comprehensiveness unlike the 1980 law, and focuses on constancy with the media establishments and the latest trends in the field".
He said the decree banning the arrest of journalists in relation to their work and the issuance of ethics of journalism were a turning point in the UAE's journalistic history.
