The UAE's Filipino community is celebrating the achievements of its women this March in an attempt to change the way they are perceived through photography and fashion shows.

Women of Substance 2010 is an annual event that celebrates Filipina achievers and female empowerment in the Gulf in conjunction with International Women's Day. Spearheaded by Illustrado, the Dubai-based Filipino lifestyle publication, it is in its third consecutive year.

The event will feature a documentary short film by Dubai-based Kamil Roxas, winner of the Hayah Film Competition at the Middle East International Film Festival 2008; a make-over runway show highlighting real Filipina beauty, a mini-bazaar and a photo exhibit.

Amateur photographers and hobbyists have been invited to send in entries portraying the different facets of the Filipina woman.

"With this endeavour, we advocate a change in the Filipina international image to a more balanced one, in the process empowering our sisters and paving the way for the rest of the community," said Lalaine Chu-Benitez, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Illustrado.

"With the photo exhibit, we want an honest, balanced, and unbiased take on the Filipina here in the Gulf – capturing not just her face, but her different facets and roles as an individual, mother, sister, daughter, wife, professional, and a citizen of the world, among others."

Interested photography aficionados must send in three images of at least 300dpi by February 28 to illustrado@inbox.com.

The contest is open to all nationalities with heavy digital layering and editing strictly prohibited.
